Have you ever wondered why people never forget their first day? Whether it is the first day of school or a new adventure, it is filled with unforgettable moments that shape our memories and help us grow. For young children, every first day is a chance to explore, play, and discover something new. For parents, it is an opportunity to watch their children take another step toward greater confidence and independence.

The first day of school is also filled with many emotions. Some children walk into the classroom with bright smiles and eager hearts, while others hold tightly to their parents, feeling a little shy or nervous.

“Some of our classmates, we all recognize each other and I was just excited and happy that we have new classmates.” -Grade 4 student
As the day begins, unfamiliar faces soon become new friends, and new routines slowly begin to feel familiar. Even newcomers immediately feel included.

I’m happy that they welcomed me, despite being new.
– New SHS student

These feelings are all part of a new experience. Another part of this experience is growing in leadership values. Students have shared that they are looking forward to building their confidence and public speaking skills this year. Along with the school’s arts and music intelligences, other students look forward to honing their bodily kinesthetic intelligence.

“I’m excited to do more multi-intelligence activities, like more sports, more performing arts. If we were gonna have more PE or sports, I would really like to try golf.”
– Grade 11 student

“As students begin their experiences in performing arts and music, I look forward (as a teacher) to adapting the curriculum to what the students need. Students nowadays want to experience music that is fun, away from the conventional way of learning.”
– Teacher Jayson, Music Teacher

During the first day of school, teachers play an important role in making every child feel welcome. Through cheerful greetings and fun activities, they create a classroom where children feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. Simple moments, such as introducing themselves, singing songs together, sharing stories, and countless other approaches to help turn nervousness into confidence.

“I prepare welcome cards along with simple treats with encouraging words that would make my students feel excited for the school year” – Teacher Agnes, Math Teacher
For parents, the first day is more than preparing uniforms and packing school bags. It is seeing their children take another step toward independence. Every school year starts with a first day, and every first day is the beginning of something new. It may last only a few hours, but the experiences, lessons, and smiles from that day stay with us for a lifetime. As children open the classroom door, they also open the door to new opportunities and a future full of possibilities.
