Learning Links Academy

Reading Time: 3 minutes

For most students learning from home this year is pretty much the new normal, there will still be some challenges from the last COVID-19 shutdown: parents busy balancing their own work needs, no in-person connection with teachers, technology headaches and more. But the best way to support online learners is through solid expert support involving everyone in the equation such as students, parents and teachers.

How Learning Links Can Help Your Kids?

As experts on this field our best advice is to focus on cultivating the following three key skills that can help your kids complete their work faster, concentrate longer, and remember more of what they are learning from their online teachers.

1. Develop Your Child's Ability to Focus

With distance learning, focus is now the most important skill for every student. Without it, kids struggle to learn. To minimize the interruptions and distractions that kill focus, you can do the following:

  • Designate a learning playing space.
  • Encourage them to step away from their desk when they take breaks.
  • Empathize with them. As parent you need to ask them how they feel

2. Create a Daily Plan for Your Kids

Creating a daily plan isn’t just a matter of scheduling or having a time management skill. A daily plan looks at the schedule and then identifies all the to-do items for your kids to be completed on that day and combines the two for a specific plan for that specific day.

3. Learn to Identify the Barriers

This is something teachers in the Learning Links Academy have been doing early on. How to pinpoint exactly what’s happening or going wrong? Diagnostic teaching is one approach that can help here but the big idea is to identify precisely why your child might be struggling: Is it focus? Motivation? Too much or too little structure? Do they need a hug or finger-wagging or for you to sit with them?

And if it’s a knowledge deficit, exactly what do they not understand? When students say, ‘I don’t get it,’ the first step is to identify exactly what ‘it’ is – and this isn’t always easy. Most students don’t know what they don’t know. That’s why parents at home and teachers in LLA are there to help make this an especially powerful remote learning experience for every kids.
